As a designer, I devour fonts and typefaces. I study them, draw my own characters, and regularly purchase and download new and exciting fonts from a host of individuals and sites. It can, however, be frustrating, when I need the use of only a single word in a design, but the font costs $100 or more. That’s why I love the Lost Type Co-Op.

The Lost Type Co-Op is a Pay-What-You-Want Type foundry, the first of its kind. Founded by Riley Cran and Tyler Galpin, originally in a whirlwind 24 hour adventure to distribute a single typeface, Lost Type has blossomed into a full fledged foundry, distributing fonts from designers all over the world, with its unique model. Users have the opportunity to pay whatever they like for a font, you can even type in ‘$0′ for a free download. 100% of funds from these sales go directly to the designers of the fonts, respectively. Lost Type takes no cut of sales, and holds no funds.

Sans-serifs? Scripts? Body, display, modern and condensed? Black and light? The Lost Type Co-Op has ’em, and they’re gorgeous. It’s even easy to view each font in action, and find out more information on the individual designers. Their blog is richly packed with examples of their fonts at work and is a total time-suck for type nerds like myself.
