I usually start thinking about my resolutions for the coming year sometime in October. Because I work as a freelance illustrator and designer for others, as well as produce my own books, drawings, and products throughout the year, it’s important for me to maintain a balance in my work and personal life.

The last few months of the year are always a great time for me to look back on what I’ve done and compare it with what I had set out to accomplish. To make sure I’m on target with my goals, and to make sure I steer clear from distractions, I like to create a ‘commitment device’ – “A decision that you make, with a cool head, to bind yourself so you don’t do something regrettable when you have a hot head.”

In this video, Daniel Goldstein makes a great presentation on what a commitment device is, and how it works.

As the year comes to a close, the battle between our present and future selves can be painfully apparent. Thank Heaven we can set up our own commitment devices and get closer to our goals and better future selves in 2012.
