SONG FOR THE COLORADO SHOOTING
(Response to Aurora 12 shooting, July 20, 2012)
While the rest of us slept
twelve of us just left
and there’s fifty or maybe even more
fillin’ up the hospital and comin’ in the doors
we’ll all join up, I guess,
with the twelve of us that left
He was twenty-four years old,
and what went wrong? who knows.
he must have had some time to think things through
he did a lot of damage and now it’s on the news,
We hadn’t known ‘em yet,
and now there’s twelve of us that left
Early on Friday morn,
a gas mask was worn,
he went to a theater, he was all dressed in black,
the twelve that went in early are never coming back,
we miss you all, you bet
the twelve of us that left
well, he stepped inside
with the mask over his eyes
he went to a theater with a handful of guns,
he threw a can of gas and it went out at everyone,
pulled out a loaded rifle and a shotgun, too,
and he used a pair of handguns and he knew just what to do
now we’re all bereft
of the twelve of us that left
some screamed and some never made a sound,
some bolted for the door, and others fell upon the ground
and what must have lasted minutes is forever gonna live
the twelve of us inside weren’t so fortunate
we all suffer the theft
of the twelve of us that left
well, he seemed so calm
and then he stepped outside
his apartment was trapped, with the same song on repeat
didn’t fight his arrest, guess he didn’t wanna see
the twelve of us that left,
the twelve
Seven billion here
something happens every year
some of us are gunmen and some of us police,
most of us trying to make ends meet
we all suffered death
with the twelve of us that left
